SO, WHAT IS ALL ABOUT OIA?
Oia, (pronounced Ea), 11 km away from Fira, the capital of Santorini, is located on the top of a breathtaking cliff with a spectacular view over the volcano and the small island of Thirassia. It’s one of the world’s best places to watch the sunset. That’s why people from around the world travel for hours to get there just for a few minutes of absolute happiness.
Oia is one of the most beautiful and picturesque villages of Santorini, with bright coloured houses, stone paths, blue domed churches and sun-bathed verandas.
Its small but well-equipped commercial market offers all kind of amenities for visitors, while great restaurants, cafés and numerous wineries offer a variety of local cuisine’s delicacies and high quality wine and distilled spirits.
If you are an artist, beware! Many artists who came to Oia fell in love with the village and stayed forever!
That’s why one can find so many art galleries here. It’s a fact. In Oia you can enjoy swimming and sunbathing at the beach of Armenis or you can take the boat to Thirassia from the small harbor of Ammoudi.
IN LOVE WITH IMEROVIGLI...
Considered to be one of the most beautiful and romantic destinations, Imerovigli has sheltered millions of enamored hearts over the years. Since it is the highest settlement of the caldera region, Imerovigli offers the most stunning view over the sea. It’s a natural “balcony” ideal for relaxation and daydreaming. In fact, due to its perfect view, Imerovigli in the old days used to be where locals would watch for pirate’s invasions.
While there are no pirates anymore, the castle on top of the enormous mid-sea rock called Scaros, stands there to remind us of the past eras. Scaros is the remains of a part of the island that collapsed after a huge earthquake.
Apart from great walks throughout the village, one can enjoy a visit to its numerous churches built on the rocky cliffs surrounding the caldera.
This excellent little piece of earth can offer the visitor many opportunities for… Facebook posts, Instagram likes and billions of re-tweets! It’s worth it, after all.
